Use photography to communicate the feeling of music on an album. Type and image must work in harmony to communicate the feeling and attitude of the record in a captivating way.
Approach
Ice Melt is Crumb’s second studio album that was released in April of 2021. As an indie psych-pop/rock band, Crumb specializes in creating anxious, cinematic soundscapes, like that of a rainy bus ride during a global pandemic. The concept of the redesign explore the reflection of light on cds and how water and camera flash influence this refraction. The photos explore use of color, motion blur, and depth of field with macro object photography.Finals
The final consists of a gatefold LP cover, an LP with side A and B labels, and a 36” x 24” folding poster that contains lyrics to each track. While the photos appear colorful, there is an underlying sense of darkness that relates to the melancholic nature of the tracks. A geometric typeface is used in the title that relates to the type used on bags of ice melt.
